You need this book if you're renting or thinking about taking the plunge. It gives tenants in all 50 states the legal and practical information they need to deal with their landlords and protect their rights when things go wrong. (Good info for landlords to know, too!) It shows tenants how to: sign a fair and legal lease or rental agreement (or design their own); get a landlord to make needed repairs and provide safe premises; complain, etc.

Dare to Repair: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Fixing (Almost) Anything in The Home (2002) by Julie Sussman & Stephanie Glakas-Tenet (Many men confess admiration for this book!) Basic repairs written in an easy-to-follow format. We love a book that cautions — prior to "repairing a leaking faucet" — ". . . and never tackle this project on a weekend or holiday when plumbers charge extra. Not that we don't have full confidence in you."
